Deion Sanders is making as big of a name with his coaching career as he did as an NFL player. The former NFL defensive back joined Jackson State University in 2020, without prior experience as a head coach. However, in just three years, Coach Prime changed the trajectory of the football program and put them on the map. In three years, JSU won  2 back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships. While also leading the Tigers to their first-ever unbeaten season in the history of the University. However, this is not the only contribution of Sanders to the team, as he also hailed an unprecedented amount of commercial value to them.

According to a report from AFROTECH.com, the player-turned-head coach helped the program to generate a lot of revenue over his tenure as well. As per a spokesperson from the HBCU, as of April 2021, Sanders helped JSU make around $185 million in revenue from “advertising value and exposure.” While the HC came on board in September 2020, it took him only 6 months to work his magic. In his time at JSU, the program was able to build new facilities and locker rooms. They also enabled many players to snag NIL deals.

However, after the conclusion of this season. The highly touted coach has left JSU to take up his role as the HC of Colorado University. Which is a big step up for Sanders as an aspiring coach.

A bittersweet farewell for Deion Sanders

While the experts and former players of the NFL are all very happy with Sanders’ success, the fans and students of the HBCU are not entirely pleased by the switch made by the two-time Super Bowl champions. After three years of immensely great time together, things are coming to a bittersweet end. Recently, one of the students even defaced a mural dedicated to the head coach. Showing the tense relationship developing following his departure from JSU.
