The NFL draft always comes up with some exciting and sometimes even emotional news. Teams wish to find hidden gems in the later rounds of the draft, and for the Dallas Cowboys, it was the sixth round on Saturday. For a stretch, Cowboys scout Chris Vaughn didn’t know what was going to happen, when the team’s general manager, Jerry Jones, asked him to flip the team’s card for their sixth-round pick.

It was that time when all his colleagues stood around the draft room, and Jones tossed him a napkin, pretending as if it was a card, Vaughn realized that the moment was going to be his son’s. This news left him on tenterhooks, with his eyes welling up with tears. They picked up Deuce Vaughn, a running back for Kansas State college football, at no. 212. Vaughn II led his team Wildcats with 642 rushing yards, and for that, he has been honored with the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year Award. With his selection by the Cowboys, his father called him on video from the draft room to break the ecstatic news.

Look here, man, do you want to come to work with me next week?” Vaughn said in a shaky voice. “I wouldn’t mind that at all,” his son answered. And then what? The feeling of elation grew in the draft room after Deuce’s response. Chris told in an interview with Dallas Cowboys that when his son was not being selected, he cried and apologized to him. “My height might have caught up to me. I might not be able to overcome this,” Deuce said in a shattered way.

It was weird because it was almost like he was apologizing for not getting drafted and kind of reassuring me, which is devastating for a parent,” Chris added further. Deuce stands 5’5” and weighs 179 pounds. Despite his short stature, Vaughn II is a fantastic athlete with pass-pro blocking skills and high-end lateral quicks. Probably, Jones got impressed by this quality of Deuce and picked him up for his team.

We’re so happy to have you on the Dallas Cowboys. Well, what I really want to say you earned every ounce of me being able to make this call. I’m so excited,” Jones said to Deuce on call. “I’ve never had an experience like that in the draft room. Ever,” Jones, via ESPN, explained his feelings on the draft.
