Carolina Panthers franchise is looking to make some changes as they re-signed TE Ian Thomas to boost their offensive firepower. The reported deal will be for 3 years for an impressive player, who is coming on the back of a good 2021 NFL season. The move was announced on Friday, just a few weeks before the start of NFL free agency.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the player contract is estimated to be a total worth of 16.95 Million. Thomas will be earning nearly $6.435 Million cash in his first year and $8 million fully guaranteed. He will be a welcome addition to the franchise as he recorded an 18-catch 188-yard season.

The incoming Panthers’ new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo employs a system that leans heavily on the tight end position. The main job in McAdoo’s system for a TE is particularly blocking, and Thomas is arguably the ideal fit.

Is Ian Thomas The Key To Carolina Panthers Offense?

The player has spent four years with the Panthers franchise and was a fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Thomas, as the Panthers TE, generated 90 catches for 802 yards and 4 TDs. His performances as a rookie were quite exciting as he recorded 333 yards and 2 TDs with 36 receptions. With a stellar outing in that season, Thomas hasn’t since replicated the same figures in his past three seasons.

A familiar face returns for the Panthers fans, who will hope he continues performing and leading the Panthers offensive and blocking charge.

He will also provide another pass-catching outlet for the Panthers, who lack depth in their TE department. Apart from Thomas, only Tommy Tremble, a 2021 third-round pick, is going to be the Panthers’ top tight end heading into the 2022 NFL season.
