Words if used correctly can work like magic. Jalen Hurts, considered one of the best Fantasy quarterbacks this season, affirms just that. Following a recent practice match with the Indianapolis Colts, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback was faced with a fans’s abrupt demand, during his interaction with the media.

Despite the unruly outcome of the match, the highest-paid player in the Eagles’ league history was able to demonstrate a demeanor that prompted his former mentor and new head coach of Indianapolis Colts, Shane Steichen, to state, “The way he went about his business. I think that’s a message to all players, especially young quarterbacks.”

Ethics before all else 

The seemingly peaceful final open practice of the training camp between the Eagles and Colts soon turned into a brawl-sparked afternoon firework putting at rest Hurts’ desire to finish practice. On being asked if the players will be “sticking up for each other,” the 25-year-old quarterback responded by saying, “You definitely want that in the team”. Even though it gets “competitive,” team players should practice and support each other. 

The QB further goes on to say that it is always a good opportunity to be able to come onto the field, “it is always good work.”

His impressive work ethic is an extension of his adherence to principles both within the field and outside. A fair demonstration of his ethics was also made during the interview when a fan abruptly appeared behind the podium with a ball in hand.

“What do you want?” asked the quarterback.

“I want you to sign my ball,” the fan said.

“What is the magic word?” Hurts asked.

“Please!” replied the fan.

Following which both shared a quick laugh. On his signing the ball the fan told the cameras, “he is the best!”

Work like words are magical too

His former mentor and present coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Shane Steichen, shared his perspective on his prosperous pupil saying, “I think the first and foremost talking about Jalen, is the work ethic that he had was second to none.”

With a 14-1 record as a starter, Jalen had 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns against just six interceptions. His quarterback rating has gradually seen a positive hike from 77.6 in his previous four starts as a rookie to 87.2 and 101.5 in his last two consecutive seasons under Steichen. The head coach is impressed with the hard work the young quarterback puts into his training and during live matches. “You want to be successful in this league, you can have all the talent in the world, but you gotta work at it,” he says.

With a $255 million contract extension with the Eagles, Hurts is nearing a possible MVP campaign with an estimated $51 million based on his performance this 2023 season. Even though he was absent in the preseason matches and is most likely to remain so for Thursday’s preseason game against Indianapolis as he prepares for the season opener. However, based on the two teams’ training camp beef, their upcoming preseason clash is worth watching!
