The Cincinnati Bengals are off to a dismal 0-2 start, and things could get even worse for them. A Hall of Famer foresees doom for the Bengals and the injured Joe Burrow. The former Cornerback laments the peculiar nature of calf injuries, continuously niggling football players. Nagging calf injuries can hamper the performance at best and be the beginning of the end of the player’s career at worst, he believes.

Darius Butler, former cornerback for New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts fears that Burrow’s fate is not the same as his former teammate Andrew Luck. Luck was stuck in a cycle of getting hurt, rehabbing, and getting hurt again. As Butler recalls, Luck’s misfortune also began with calf strains. Ex-NFL CB dreads the possibility of Burrow also being one of those big names who suffered from calf issues but his recent troubles indicate Bengals QB is getting closer in that list.

Darius Butler was on The Pat McAfee show, where the former NFL star started to detail the issues of calf injuries. He stated that calf injuries tend to linger more than any other type of injury. He told the host McAfee “Remember that was the thing with Andrew Luck even he was a calf (calf injury) and then it was an ankle and then it was something else. Obviously, A-Rod had the calf injury you know before the freak tackle.”

As Butler pointed out, former Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers missed seven games in 2014 with a calf strain and played through pain in 2018 with another one. Butler further went on to say “…now Burrow has the calf so this something to be, obviously very concerned about with Joe Burrow.”

Bengals’ and Burrow’s fate in the hands of doctors now

Calf injuries are tricky to heal and can linger for a long time. They can also lead to other injuries, such as hamstring or Achilles problems, if not treated properly.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Joe Burrow after the game told media “(He) tweaked (his calf) on the play before Cincinnati’s final touchdown.”

Coach Zac Taylor while engaging with the media members said “First of all we have to hear what the doctors have to say before we start to assume anything.” When asked about next week’s game against the Los Angeles Rams and Burrow’s chances, the coach added “It depends on the advice of the medical staff.”

After the loss against the Baltimore Ravens (24-27) this week, the Bengals will be looking for a strong showing at Paycor Stadium when they welcome the Rams next week. For that to happen they need a fit and performing Burrow.

The QB has shown resilience and toughness throughout his career. He will need to do it again if he wants to lead the Bengals out of their losing streak and into contention. We’ll be hoping for a quick recovery for Joe Cool and wish to see him back in the field being an annoyance for the defenses.
