There is a long-standing feud between Disney and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The feud started after Disney spoke up against the dubbed “Don’t Say Gay” bill. In response to Disney’s stand on the controversial bill, DeSantis called to remove Disney World’s self-governing status. This status had allowed the entertainment giants to call their own decisions, majorly involving development processes. The feud escalated last month after Disney was able to silently disenfranchise the new board setup without it coming to DeSantis’ allies’ notice.

No, I’m just saying, get them some other way. A prison complex next to Disney World? You got to be kidding me.”

The Disney Vs DeSantis feud

On March 28, 2022, Disney released a statement saying that they will have the “Don’t Say Gay” law repealed. They were of the belief that such a bill should never have been passed. This made DeSantis state that Disney was “crossing the line” by deciding to not abide by the law governed by his government. They then started to look into the Reedy Creek Improvement Act that grants Disney the right to act like their own government.

Rather than expunging Reedy Creek, the lawmakers decided to approve a bill that gave control to DeSantis over the district and also appoint new members to the five-seat board. The Board’s chairman then recently said that an ‘11th-hour agreement’ allowed Disney to set its own utility rates through 2032.
