Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner became the latest NFL player to be part of protests which are raging across the United States. He saw and experienced the sentiments of the masses with his own eyes and conveyed the same at a virtual call with the media.

Here, in his opening address, he expressed the need to speak about the current situation before getting to football. He terms the things that have happened as “crazy” and even took a dig at President Trump.

“Like many of the black community, you know I am hurt, sad, and in pain that we had to watch another video of a black man being murdered. That’s not something that you ever get used to.”

Wagner says he supports the protestors as he understands why what is going on. However, he urges the media to remember their role and power to control the narrative.

“I feel like a lot of the focus is on the rioting, the looting, the people stealing stuff. But we’re not talking enough about what started that. I think the black community is tired of seeing the same things going on and not seeing change. We’re tired of not seeing people held accountable for their actions.”

The linebacker shares conversations he has had with people. He says, “somebody said, ‘I’m afraid to have a black child. Because I don’t know how they are going to be treated in this world on their skin color.”

Wagner says this is not a position anyone should be in. Furthermore, he calls for education on both sides.

Education on both sides is important

Wagner urges the white media to have conversations with the black media.

“I feel that the white people need to educate themselves on what the black experience is like. It is important to understand the things they go through. Because it’s important to understand who you’re working with and the things that they have to deal with.”

“You don’t need it to happen to someone close to you for you to feel that way. And so I just urge everybody to educate themselves. I urge everybody to figure out what we can do to make this better. I don’t have all the answers. I’m hurting and pissed off like everybody else. I’m tired like everybody else.”

He continued by attacking the President, “You know I want to see something different. But it’s gonna take some leadership and we don’t have that leadership right now. We have someone in Office that is calling Black protesters thugs and white protesters good people and that’s not OK.”

As per the Seattle Times report, the session came following a Seahawks team meeting where the players did not touch on football. Instead, they “focused on what was going on in the world. Because at the end of the day, life is bigger than football.”
