Will the Patrick Mahomes – Deshaun Watson’s rivalry reach the level of Brady and Manning?

Popular NFL players-turned-analysts Emmanuel Acho and Marcellus Wiley spoke about the budding rivalry between Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Both players are relatively young but have shown signs of excellence while playing in the NFL. Mahomes, in particular, has been one of the standout performers in the league since 2018.

Both hosts compared the two stars to NFL all-time greats, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Brady and Manning were long-time rivals but shared a great mutual respect for each other.

Undoubtedly, they remain the two greatest quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL. But is it fair to liken their rivalry to that of youngsters like Mahomes and Watson? The folks at Speak For Yourself don’t think so.

The Texas-born lad bagged the 2018 NFL MVP award off the back of a record-breaking season. The Chiefs’ shot-caller became the first player after Peyton Manning to throw for more than 5,000+ yards and complete 50 TDs in a single season.

Mahomes followed up that performance by leading the Chiefs to their first-ever Super Bowl appearance since 1970. The 24-year-old star went on to lead the Chiefs to their first Lombardi Trophy in 50 years while also winning the Super Bowl LIV MVP honor.

In comparison to that, Deshaun Watson still has a long way to go. As far as individual honors are concerned, Watson was a Heisman Trophy runner-up during his college football days. Since joining Houston Texans in 2017, Watson was voted to the Pro Bowl team on two occasions.

He was rewarded for his consistency with a four-year contract extension over the weekend, consequently becoming one of the top-paid quarterbacks in the league after signing his new deal.

Of course, Pat Mahomes is currently the highest-paid player in the league. Mahomes’ 10-year contract extension worth $450 million (excluding bonuses) is one of the biggest sporting contracts of all time.

Both these stars have shown flashes of excellence. While Mahomes definitely falls in the “GOAT” debate, Watson still has a lot to prove before he can be labeled as a ‘great quarterback’.

Regardless, the future of the NFL is in bright hands with players like Mahomes, Watson, and Lamar Jackson as the torchbearers.
