Today, Gisele Bündchen might be one of the highest-paid supermodels in the world, but Brazilian beauty has traversed a long path to reach this height. It all started with a desire to travel. To travel to big cities, and carve a niche as a professional volleyball player.

The Brazilian Supermodel fancied playing volleyball as a child. And it turns out it wasn’t just an interest. Her on-court skills were insane. She actually loved pursuing the sport.
If she would have continued with the game, Bündchen would have certainly become a volleyball star. But the twist of fate landed her a modeling gig at 14 after getting enrolled in a beauty contest for local girls. Growing up in the small town of Horizontina, the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul, Bündchen aspired to pursue a career in sports.

She loved traveling, and that was the reason why she enrolled in the modeling course. They offered a trip to São Paulo at the end of the class. It was indeed appealing for a 13-year-old who had never been to a big city and the ride was 25 hours from her place.
After an eventful bus ride, Bündchen landed in the city and watched a real mall for the first time. Thrilled by the experience, she went to an amusement park and later on a meal at McDonald’s. It was all a dream for her to wear a dashing black outfit along with the other 54 uniformed girls.

That’s when a modeling agent saw Bündchen in the restaurant and asked her if she was interested in making a career out of it. Not to mention, she was naïve and had zero understanding of the field. “I had never seen fashion magazines,” she said in an interview with a broad smile on her face. “I told my mom I didn’t want to be a model, and my mom wasn’t sure, either,” she added.

After getting an opportunity to visit Sao Paulo, Bundchen participated in a beauty contest for the first time. It was in a nearby town. Her mom, Vania Bündchen, always remained a pillar of support and was cool about her daughter trying something different.

It was a big success for the teenager who walked down the runway as instructed by an elite modeling agent. Eventually, she got selected with four other contestants to move to São Paulo to model full-time.

However, her dad couldn’t assimilate the sudden transition in his daughter’s career. “My dad hated it. He was like, ‘No, my daughter is not going to be a model. Everyone says they are a model, and they are just prostitutes and sl*ts.’ My father was never for it.” Bündchen said about her father.

“But then I showed him my first magazine photo, and he realized I was not that kind of model.” She explained how she finally convinced her dad. Ultimately, the Supermodel climbed the ladders of success and became one of the top in-demand stars of the world.
