NFL fans across the globe are abuzz thanks to Urban Meyer taking up the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Head Coach job. Meyer is a legend when it comes to college football.

Known for his ability to establish a winning culture wherever he goes, this Jaguars job is a whole new challenge for the 3-time national championship winner.

While many coaches have failed to replicate their collegiate success in the NFL, Meyer’s former co-worker at FOX Sports, Jimmy Johnson, is a man who belongs to a different category.

Johnson, a Hall of Famer, started his coaching career in college football but later transitioned his success into the NFL as well. A 2-time Super Bowl winning Head Coach with the Dallas Cowboys, Johnson recently spoke about the conversation he had with Urban Meyer regarding the Jaguars job.

Johnson warned Urban Meyer about the challenges ahead

During a segment of the Dan Patrick Show, Johnson said that he never tried to dissuade Meyer from taking up the job. But instead warned him of the many challenges that lie ahead.

“No, actually, we had a couple of conversations when (University of) Texas was trying to hire him. And I wanted to compare college coaching and professional coaching which he had never done,” Johnson said.

“And I told him, I said, if you think college coaching is a grind professional coaching is a completely different world.”

Speaking in detail about the challenges that lie ahead, Johnson said the job is one that can take a toll on one’s personal life.

“In college, even though you got recruiting, you’ve got a family life, you got a social life. You can actually go play golf in the offseason. You know, you’ve got time to yourself,” Johnson said.

“(But) I said, if you’re going to be in charge of personnel, which you should be, because he knows all the college players. And if you’re going to be in charge of personnel, as well as the Head Coach, you’re not going to have any time for family, social or anything.”

Meyer has been known for his battles with his health and wellbeing. The toll of being a Head Coach is no joke. And the sooner Meyer gets used to the pressure, the better his prospects of establishing a dynasty in the NFL.
