The deadline for the Tennessee Titans to sign Derrick Henry is closing in faster than ever. They must sign papers before 4 p.m. ET today in order to secure a long-term deal. Once the time exceeds, there won’t be much left to do for either Titans or Henry. And it seems like the Tennessee Titans’ quarterback Ryan Tannehill wants his club to offer Henry a long-term contract.

Ryan Tannehill is fond of Derrick Henry
The 2019 NFL season’s leading rusher is currently on a one-year tag. In 2019, Derrick rushed 1,540 yards, which was the highest in the NFL. He also recorded 16 rushing touchdowns on 303 carries last year.

In an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio, Tannehill admitted that he loves to play with Henry. The 31-year-old quarterback also proposed that the running back deserves to get paid. The interview was later posted on Twitter.
Tannehill said, “You know, a little bit. I respect Derrick. I love playing with Derrick and think he played his tail off last year and should be paid. So you know, anytime a teammate gets paid, that’s something that I get excited about.
“Especially a guy who worked extremely hard and lays it on the line each and every week. So, obviously would love to see Derrick get extended and, you know, I’ll be keeping an eye on that.”

Too much money locked in for the Titans
Back in April, Henry signed a $10.278 million franchise tag with the Tennessee Titans. As per the NFL regulations, if both parties fail to reach final negotiations regarding a long-term deal before today’s deadline, any multi-year contract between them won’t be possible before 2021.
Tannehill’s desire to have Derrick Henry as his long-time partner in Tennessee is quite understandable. However, the possibility of the Titans signing a new contract with Henry seems highly unlikely.

The Tennessee Titans have already signed a big deal with Tannehill this offseason. In the process, they freed up the franchise tag for Henry.
Back in March, Tannehill signed a four-year contract with the Titans worth $118 million along with $91 million in guarantees. The franchise has already invested a major chunk of its budget during this preseason.
