The surprising end of the New England Patriots’ partnership with Cam Newton this August raised many eyebrows. The former league MVP lost the quarterback battle to the rookie sensation Mac Jones, who certainly got critics talking about him due to his outstanding preseason spell.

Cam though succeeding Tom Brady as the quarterback of the New England Patriots last season, his lacking of well-poised performances resulted in the team not making the playoffs for the first time since 2008. And even during the preseason, he failed to impress the head coach Bill Belichick.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels on Cam Newton and Mac Jones
During an interview with Josh McDaniels, the offensive coordinator of the Patriots on Wednesday, he said, “I have a tremendous amount of respect for him [Newton] as a player, as a human being,” McDaniels said. “He knows how I feel about him. He did everything he could to try and help us win.”

Though Newton’s efforts fell short to add any significant accomplishments to the team. Giving a career-low performance last season with a 7-8 record that included 10 interceptions and just eight touchdowns. Because of which the head coach saw him as a poor investment.

McDaniels’ remarks on the rookie quarterback were, “When you look at the whole body of work since he’s gotten here, he’s been well-prepared each day to come in and do the things we ask our players to do,” to which he adds, ” … He’s improved. He’s generally taken care of the football… Really feel confident about [Jones’] approach. [He] tries not to make the same mistake twice. He’s really shown a strong aptitude at a young age to put those mistakes behind him.”

There is no surprise as to why the management chose Mac Jones over Cam Newton. Yet there is still more to accomplish for the rookie apart from a mere preseason display. Let’s see if he stands out to those expectations.
