Kyler Murray seems to attract controversy now and then. In the pre-season, a mandatory “independent study” clause was added and then removed from his lucrative contract deal which attracted attention. Now, it seems former running back LeSean McCoy has some words to say about Murray. And they are not nice.

On the podcast ‘I Am Athlete Today’ where McCoy is a co-host, he talks about Murray’s playing style, calling it “trash”.

“He’s trash. Overhyped. Overrated, He plays like a high school player. Runs around, runs backwards, he does a circle, the ballerina circle, then goes left, goes right, turns all the way around again, then looks for a wide receiver. That’s not how you play quarterback.”

It is interesting to note that McCoy does have a valid point. Murray looks like he is dependent on his athleticism a lot more than needed, often resorting to rushing in and out of pockets. A case in point is his sensational 2-point conversion against the Las Vegas Raiders this season.

This seems to perfectly resonate with what McCoy claims. “He ain’t reading no coverages. When a quarterback is running around like that all day, all night, all game, that’s because he’s not reading any coverages.”

Maybe it is now clear why the Cardinals wanted the “independent study” clause in his contract. The QB has a 90/141 for 784 yards and 3 touchdowns in 3 games. But his completion rate is not the best, 63.8%. McCoy’s statements are only reinforced, with an average of only 5.6 yards a pass attempt.

Criticized for Taking Their Ugly Contract Negotiations Public, NFL Analyst Breaks Down Similarities Between Aaron Rodgers and Kyler Murray After Both QBs Emerge Victorious in Week 2

“Now when they say ‘We want to sign you to a big contract for $100 million, but you gotta watch a certain film.’ Now it makes sense, I see why,” says McCoy.

Veteran Shannon Sharpe criticizes Kyler Murray’s QB stats

Along with McCoy, it seems veteran NFL player and analyst Shannon Sharpe is also not impressed with Murray. On ‘Undisputed’, talking about his performance against the Raiders, he says, “They were down 20 to nothing, with eight minutes and 25 seconds to go in the third quarter. He’d only passed for 53 yards in the first half…..with zero points,”

“And here’s the thing that’s concerning. We haven’t got to the halfway point because what have we seen in Kyler Murray’s career once he gets to the halfway point? Numbers do this (drop-down gesture). His body starts to do that (crooked gesture). He gets dinged, he gets nicked. So I’m not going to say ‘Oh…. is Kyler back’ or ‘the Cardinals back’. No….talk to me (in) week 12 and if Kyler Murray is still healthy, doing some of the things I just watched him (do) last week….this was backyard football now I just watched.”

Kyler Murray receives praises for his athletic abilities

It’s not all bad for Murray, for he’s received some compliments for his rushing prowess, too. Carolina Panthers Head Coach Matt Rhule says, “A lot of guys are talented. He’s skilled. I saw him do things in college football that made me want to walk off the field.”

Murray seems to really split the field when it comes to opinions about him. But fans will be hoping he can shun these talks out of his mind, and focus on taking the Cardinals to the playoffs this season, just like last year.
