Billionaire Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, made an initial investment of $140 million in the NFL franchise. Under his stewardship, the franchise has grown into one of the richest and most globally recognized NFL franchises. His net worth has spiraled to more than $10 billion, and he is one of the most influential people in the NFL.

Due to the extremely high growth of his fortune from multiple business ventures, people sometimes consider Jones as the Jeff Bezos of sports.

Jerry Jones and the purchase of a lifetime

Jones bought the Cowboys in 1989 from his friend H.R. “Bum” Bright, investing $140 million in it. It was the largest NFL deal back then. The Cowboys were not making money then, but Jones guided the team to become the most valuable brand in sports over the next 30 years.

Jones was not the wealthiest franchise owner, but that did not stop him from becoming one of the biggest figures in the NFL through the sheer force of his personality.

Commenting on Jones’ exceptional talent, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban wrote to The Dallas Morning News, “Jerry is one of the greatest business disruptors in the history of sports.” Continuing, he said, “When he got into the NFL, he looked at the way things were always done, saw a better way [and] made it happen.”.

Humble beginnings…

Jones had a humble childhood. He recollected standing in front of his family’s supermarket and ushering customers in. Despite his massive growth in fortunes over the last 30 years, he still tries to add value to Dallas, where his franchise is based. His firms generate enough opportunities for the community as well puts Texas on the global map.

Jones has made remarkable achievements in sports. He has managed to utilize the strengths of the Cowboys to increase revenue generation for the franchise on a long-term basis at a consistent basis.

He even struck his own sponsorship deals in 1995, bypassing the NFL’s rules, and attempted to make the Cowboys’ brand as visible as possible nationally and internationally.
