Dallas Cowboys start the 2020 season as one of the most complete teams in the NFL. Especially in the offensive department. With seasoned NFL quarterback Dak Prescott calling the shots once again, new head coach Mike McCarthy is blessed with a top-notch wideout department at his disposal. As if Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup were not enough, the Cowboys drafted college football star CeeDee Lamb in the 2020 NFL draft.
Lamb posted 1,300+ receiving yards and 14 TDs for Oklahoma Sooners in 2019. He opted to forgo his senior year and declared for the 2020 NFL draft. The Cowboys got Lamb in the first round (17th overall). They have now given him the revered number 88 jersey in Dallas. Here’s the interesting story behind how owner Jerry Jones’ grandsons influenced their granddad to draft the promising receiver.

In an interaction with The Athletic’s Jon Machota, Jerry Jones spoke about the backstory behind Lamb’s arrival in Dallas. He also gave an insight into how Lamb was given the famous no. 88 jersey previously worn by some great Cowboy wide receivers. In recent years, the likes of Michael Irvin, Drew Pearson, and Dez Bryant donned the number 88 jersey. Is former OSU star CeeDee Lamb the next big name to put on that fabled jersey?

He said, “I feel like as a receiver, you have to expect the unexpected. No matter where the ball is, it’s your job to catch it. The quarterback has done all the hard parts. He got the ball out of his hands. He made checks and he did everything else. Now it’s you. Just understanding that everything is not going to go as planned and the ball is not going to be where it needs to be all the time. Prepare myself for the worst, and when the best happens, it feels great.”
Dak Prescott also heaps praise on CeeDee Lamb

In an earlier interaction with ESPN, Cowboys’ star quarterback Dak Prescott had positive words to say about his new teammate.
“He’s a smart kid, a smart individual. He’s been picking it all up. Whether it’s adjustments from the formations and plays, that hasn’t slowed him down or slowed his game down any bit at all. I mean, he’s just an athletic player. Very, very gifted. Good hands. Has a great feel for the game,” Prescott said via Sportscasting.com.

Prescott and Lamb spent time training in the offseason while everything seemed uncertain due to the coronavirus pandemic. As things stand, Lamb will play a big role for the Cowboys in 2020. Along with Cooper, Gallup, and of course Lamb, the Dallas-based franchise boasts one of the best wide receiving corps. in the league. Let’s hope coach McCarthy finds an effective way to use his wideouts over the course of the coming months.
