“I Feel Like I’m Going to Die”: Jerry Jones Recalls His Iconic Conversation With Previous Dallas Cowboys Owner Before Making the Purchase

Jerry Jones has been a proud owner of the Dallas Cowboys for over 30 years. He wanted to buy the Cowboys even after knowing that the team owned by Bum Bright was drowning and bleeding $1 million in a month. 

His group of advisors suggested not to travel that path leading to a black hole. However, Jones believed he could fix the team and went forward with the deal.

Jones recalled the first time he talked to Bum Bright regarding acquiring the Dallas Cowboys. Jones said, “Oh, I think when I decided to buy the cowboys, I was in Cabo San Lucas.”

 

 “I was recovering from a long night, and I called the owner of the cowboys at the time, Bum Bright, and said if I don’t die and I feel like I’m going to die, but if I get well, I’m going to come back to Dallas and buy the cowboys. My name is jones. You don’t know me, but I want to talk to you.”

It is where his journey with the Cowboys started, and he took America’s team to greater heights. Narrator John Facenda in the year 1978, coined the term ‘America’s Team’ in a Dallas Cowboys highlight film.

Facenda said that the Dallas Cowboys appear so much on TV and are as famous as any of the US presidents and movie stars that it should be known as ‘America’s Team.’

Dallas Cowboys have won five Super Bowls in the NFL. Jerry Jones bought the team in 1989 in a then record-breaking $150 million deal. After Jones acquired the Cowboys, the team dominated the 90s era and were NFL champions in 1993, 1994, and 1996. Cowboys also won five NFC Championships and two Super Bowl titles in 1972 and 1978.

Cowboys were at a loss when Jones bought the franchise, but according to Forbes, they were the most profitable NFL team in 2021. The Cowboys is valued at $6.5 billion with an operating income of $280.4 million.

Also, the 79-year-old businessman, Jerry Jones, claimed he could sell the Cowboys at $10 billion if he wants to. But Jones won’t let the team slip off so easily as he has risked enough to build this team. He would, at all costs, want the Cowboys to stay in his family for generations.
