Myles Garett, the 2017 NFL first draft pick, agreed to a five-year contract extension with Cleveland Browns earlier this week. The 24-year-old had a stellar season with the Browns last year before the incident with Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph.

Garett was suspended indefinitely for an altercation with Rudolph. He missed the remainder of the 2019 regular season and the postseason as well. In addition, the youngster was fined $45,623 for his on-field transgressions.

After a meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell, Garett was reinstated in the league earlier this year. The promising defensive end penned a five-year extension with the Browns which included $100 million in total guarantees.

While speaking to ESPN, Garett spoke about how he feels the need to assert his dominance in the league over the course of the 2020 season.

“Now I have to assert myself as top dog. I feel like I’m confident and ready to do that. Time to prove it. They had faith in me, and now I’ve got to give [the Browns] a reason to have that faith.

“I’m going to do my best to make it worth it to them,” Garett said.

The Pro Bowler became the highest-paid defensive player in the league after he signed his new contract. As per reports, Garett will take home a cool $25 million per annum. This is the highest annual salary for a defensive player in the NFL.

Previously, the 2016 NFL Defensive player of the year, Khalil Mack, was the highest-paid defensive player in the league. He had averaged a pay of $23 million with $90 million in guarantees.

I want to take Cleveland to the promised land, asserts Garett

The former Texas A&M man remains confident and claims that he can guide the Browns to the playoffs this season. Baker Mayfield, Odell Beckham Jr, and Garett will be shouldering the pressure to live up to expectations after a sub-par 2019 outing.

“I was in the [defensive] player of the year conversation [last year]. I don’t want to make it a conversation anymore. This next year, I want to ball out, win that award … take my team to the playoffs. … I want to lead Cleveland to the promised land.

“The players I’ve played with and know, that’s not who they see. They’ve never thought of me that way. I’ve never been that,” Garett added.
