Ian Rapoport Gives His Take on Aaron Rodgers-Green Bay Packers Standoff

The Aaron Rodgers-led Green Bay Packers were crowned the NFC North champions in 2020. The Matt LaFleur-coached franchise ended their regular season campaign with a 13-3 record.
The 38-year-old Rodgers was also adjudged as NFL MVP after throwing for 4,300+ yards with 50+ passing touchdowns (Playoffs included).
However, with Rodgers entering the final phase of his deal with the Packers, there were hopes that he would restructure his deal in order to free up some cap space in 2021.

But the veteran quarterback refused to do so. Rodgers received a significant roster bonus worth $6,800,000 earlier this week. The Green Bay Packers are going to take a massive cap hit of $37,202,000 from Rodgers’ contract alone, which does not bode well for their roster plans.

He replied, “You know what we’ve seen with the Packers and Aaron Rodgers is a little bit of a standoff, something that’s really happened in the last couple of days, a couple of weeks actually. I know they’d like him to kind of restructure his deal, he has not wanted to.
“My colleague (Mike Silver) has been reporting that Rodgers wants to make sure he’s there for the foreseeable future, doesn’t want to do anything so that they can move on from him.

“In a way, I sort of understand it because we’ve seen Tom Brady play till he’s 40, Drew Brees played till he was 40, Aaron Rodgers is going, ‘Can I? Like why are you trying to get rid of me because you drafted Love in the first round?’
“So, you know, that’s been a little bit of a standoff and what it’s also been was kind of stopped the Packers from making any moves in free agency which is another different interesting issue,” Rapoport said on the show.

The Packers freed up some cap space by restructuring the deals of Mason Crosby and Adrian Amos. However, they are reportedly still $8 million below the salary cap for 2021. It will be interesting to see how the Wisconsin-based franchise strengthens its roster.
