One such instance came about in 2019. The NFL asked Rihanna to perform during the halftime show of the 2018 season Super Bowl. The singer refused the offer because of a very poignant reason directly related to QB Colin Kaepernick and what he had been advocating in the NFL.

What did Colin Kaepernick have to do with Rihanna’s refusal?
Rihanna’s decision to refuse to perform was linked directly to the cause Colin Kaepernick was propagating from the 2016 season. The 49ers QB was protesting social justice causes during his last season in the NFL. He exited in 2016, despite many celebrity friends supporting his cause.

One of these celebrities was Rihanna. Rihanna showcased her solidarity with Kaepernick by not attending the Super Bowl halftime show. In a subsequent interview, she said, “I couldn’t dare do that. For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler.”

Revisiting the 2019 Super Bowl
The 2019 Super Bowl was culmination of the 2018 season and was between the LA Rams and the New England Patriots. The Patriots, led by Tom Brady, won the contest (13-3), the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in history. It was very much the defense’s game until Tom Brady’s intervention led to the Patriots leading the match.

It was the first time a Super Bowl match had gone into the fourth quarter without a single touchdown. The victory marked the Patriots’ record-tying 6th Super Bowl. It was also Tom Brady’s last match with the Patriots. Despite being the oldest winning quarterback in a Super Bowl, he faced and completed four straight passes, including a pair covering 47 yards to Gronkowski.

Rihanna’s decision to not perform the halftime show clearly displayed her belief in Colin Kaepernick’s vision. However, the NFL world missed out on an excellent performance during the Super bowl with Rihanna’s refusal to be a part of it.
