The USA has one of the biggest and most varied sports industries. Thus it is quite common for athletes to develop friendships beyond the pitch with other celebrities. Hollywood stars and NFL stars are often seen to be hanging out with each other. Consequently, we saw Leo and Tom Brady hang out recently months after Brady’s break up.

This was not the only instance where Hollywood stars and NFL stars have developed close friendships. As in a recent podcast on gameswithnames, we found out about a healthy friendship between Mathew and a former Pro baller.

Matthew McConaughey is intense and not afraid to show it

Ricky Williams was on the gameswithnames show with former NFL Super Bowl winner Julian Edelman and comedian Sam Morril. In a conversation with them on their show, Ricky revealed how he would get 20 min voicemails from Matthew. “Every night after the game I would come home and there’d be like 20 min voicemail on my answering machine from Mathew” said Ricky while conversing with Edelman and Morril.

In the same conversation, Ricky continues, “It was real speaking from the heart, motivational speeches, you know.” Ricky reflects on his time in the NFL fondly as he appreciated the voicemails from Matthew.

Ricky goes on to talk about Matthew and his persona on the podcast. “He is a really intense dude, he’ll get close to you, like this close, right in the eye and say what he has to say to you, it was a treat,” says the former Saints Running back.

Leaving the NFL transformed Ricky’s life

For many being a pro baller in the NFL is the dream. Reaching the top and touching the field where legends have played their best over the years. It sounds to be the most amazing thing one can experience, but it also comes with its own grim reality. Ricky Williams realized this well into his NFL career and decided to do something about it.

Ricky started his Marijuana company in his bid to act and combat mental health. His company, ‘Highsman’ trades in cannabis in 2021 with the goal to make the concept of cannabis less negative and spin it on a positive note.

Matthew and Ricky shared more than a couple of good moments with each other during their time in Texas. But Ricky saw more to life and his ambition as he left the NBA in the early decade.
