Colin Kaepernick recalls bitter words that made him think 

Former Niners QB Colin Kaepernick recently released ‘Change the Game’, an autobiographical graphic novel that revolves around his days of growing up in a white adoptive family. One of the incidents that he recalled in the novel was a baseball game that didn’t go well for him.

According to the graphic novel, young Kaepernick was having a bad day as a pitcher. He gave away five runs, including a home run, in a single inning. A devastated young Kaepernick could not think straight for a while. He got even madder when his father had to leave for work before the game was over. But a note from his father when the young boy got home changed his life forever.

“When you are trying to correct a problem, you should start by looking in the mirror,” the note from his father said, according to the graphic novel.

The ex-QB admitted that the note made him even angrier. That was because his father was right. And it changed his perspective on life forever.

The adoptive family 

Colin Kaepernick grew up as a black kid in a white family. His parents Rick and Teresa Kaepernick adopted him as a baby a few weeks after he was born in December 1987. And he has been open about the unique challenges that came as a result of his racial difference from his adoptive family.

Most recently he opened up about it while promoting his graphics novel. While he admitted that his parents loved him, Kaepernick said that he went through some problematic things while growing up. But he has also said that he wouldn’t want to have grown up with anybody else in the world.

Kaepernick last played in the NFL in the 2016 season, when he famously started taking a knee during the national anthem. He did that to protest for racial justice in America. The talented QB might not have played the game he loved after that, but he left a lasting legacy in the sphere of social justice.
