Former Carolina Panthers man Cam Newton hit rock bottom when his NFL franchise opted against renewing his contract. The dual-threat quarterback has dealt with injuries over the last year. He barely featured for the Panthers in 2019. Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots took a calculated risk and signed Newton on a one-year deal worth for around $1.5 million.

The veteran NFL shot-caller arrived in New England with a point to prove. Belichick was adamant that Newton will not be an automatic starter after he signed with the Pats. In the build-up to the 2020 season, Belichick is weighing-up his options for the quarterback spot. But will Cam’s off-field antics affect Belichick’s assessment in the coming weeks? Here’s what certain NFL experts had to say on that topic.

Skip said, “Cam Newton, a kid? Are you kidding me? I got to tell you, I found this somewhat disrespectful on the part of coach Belichick. I found this quote to have a little bit of mixed message, good news/bad news. He (Cam Newton) is hard-working, which he is and always has been, but he’s still a kid to Belichick and I wanna remind everybody that Cam Newton is 31 years of age.”

“Five years ago, he was the MVP of this league and carried a team pretty much on his back to the Super Bowl. He has made three Pro Bowls, he didn’t win the Super Bowl but you at least have to give him credit for playing in a Super Bowl… I want to remind everybody that Bill Belichick always looks before he leaps when speaking to the media. Everything is premeditated,” Skip said on the show.

At 31, Cam Newton is certainly not a ‘kid’ by any means. The 2015 NFL MVP award winner will be competing against Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer for a starting quarterback spot. As per rumors, he is currently the favorite to replace Brady in the New England Patriots’ starting line-up. The question remains, can he stay fit this season?
