‘Its on Him’ – Expert Gives His Take on Urban Meyer’s NFL Coaching Debut

AFC South franchise Jacksonville Jaguars ended their 2020 NFL campaign on a low note. They finished at the bottom of their division with a 1-15 record with Gardner Minshew as their starting quarterback. Owner Shahid Khan fired Doug Marrone as a result of their poor displays last year, bringing in legendary Ohio State coach Urban Meyer in his stead.

Meyer has been a college football head coach since the 2003 season. He has been with the Utah Utes, Florida Gators, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He left his last position back in 2018. After two years on the sidelines, Meyer is ready to return to the locker room with the Jaguars this year.

Popular NFL analyst Albert Breer was the latest guest to appear on The Rich Eisen Show. The senior NFL reporter was asked to comment on coach Meyer’s fortunes in the NFL. Here’s what he replied.

“A lot of NFL people look at it and say ‘If Urban’s staff is around him, he could be a really good NFL coach’. But a lot of it is going to boil down to how good of a job he did…it’s on him. It’s his responsibility to have hired the right coaches around him.”

“You know, Urban’s program which has been successful everywhere he has been and ‘his way’ can be successful in the NFL but it’s still only going to go as far as the results take him…getting those results is going to ride, not just on Urban, but on a lot of other people,” Breer said on the show.

Coach Meyer boasts an NCAA career record of 187–32 as a head coach. He was part of 15 Bowls and suffered defeat in just 3. But only time will tell if he can replicate the same performances with the Jaguars.

The Florida-based franchise is expected to select Trevor Lawrence as the 1st overall pick at the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. They’ve also made some smart free-agent signings this summer but they’ll need Lawrence to come through when the season starts in September. Watch this space for more.
