Jim Irsay and the Indianapolis Colts have managed to pull off a revelation that surprised and amused the NFL world. Firing head coach Frank Reich wasn’t the only move up their sleeve. The Colts welcomed former Packers center and current analyst Jeff Saturday as their new interim coach.

This move comes as a big surprise because of Saturday’s underwhelming resume. Saturday’s lack of coaching experience at a college or league level. The bare minimum of what a head coach would need points you in the direction of why this move comes as a surprise.

Aside from the lack of credentials, Irsay’s faith on Saturday, alongside the fact that they had approached no one else regarding the job, is a lot to take in.

The Colts’ press conference featured Jim Irsay in his element. This announcement has ushered in confusion and amusement partly because of Irsay’s statements. An outlandish analogy about sausages, among other statements, has caused much bewilderment among fans.

Jim Irsay has been very verbose

Irsay believes in Saturday’s abilities and knows he is capable of taking on the role because of his experience as a player. Although, it would be sensible to offer data or logical reasons that back up his reasoning with regard to the move. However, Irsay instead pieced together a web of metaphors and sentiments.

Pushing the boundaries of absurdity, Irsay made another bizarre comparison. A former player with no coaching experience coming in to lead a team is rare, but believable. Irsay went a couple of steps beyond and made a comparison with one of the league’s most successful coaches, Don Shula.

He said, “Shula was 32 years old. He had three nondescript years with the Detroit Lions before he took over the reins in 1963.”

“No, the game is not different. We don’t build rockets to go to Mars. We’re not nuclear scientists. That is none of our jobs here. It’s very simple jobs that we do here. We cultivate winning cultures. We cultivate toughness,” he added.

After suffering a humiliating 26-3 defeat against the New England Patriots, the Colts will be looking forward to breaking their 3-game losing streak.

Putting aside the unconventional nature of this decision aside, Colts fans will hope that Irsay’s intuition plays in their favor. They will aim to improve their current 3-5-1 when they take on the Las Vegas Raiders.
