The Washington Commanders included the veteran quarterback Carson Wentz in their depth chart and assigned him to start for the team. But before making a final move, Ron Rivera was about to make an agreement with the Niners quarterback. The NFL insider, Adam Schefter, recently disclosed the truth through social media.

“The 49ers had the parameters of a trade agreement in place that would have sent Jimmy Garoppolo to the Commanders at this year’s scouting combine, but the deal fell apart once the QB decided to have shoulder surgery, per a source.” he wrote on Twitter.

Niners HC affirms that the franchise had no worries bringing back Jimmy Garoppolo

For the past five seasons, Jimmy Garoppolo turned in as one of the best starters of the franchise. However, his tryst with the injuries remained a matter of concern, forcing San Francisco to find a replacement for the veteran.

Second-year quarterback Trey Lance was later announced as the starter, ahead of the 2022 season. Garoppolo had to go through shoulder surgery in March, which kept him away from the Niners’ wishlist of starting quarterbacks. But since they couldn’t find a new home, the franchise announced him as a backup to Lance, and evidently, that decision paid off.

“We have a starting quarterback as a backup,” HC Kyle Shanahan said. “The rest of the league had a chance to get him, and I feel so fortunate that they didn’t. There’s no way that’s bad for our team.” Shanahan added after signing a deal with Garoppolo. While the veteran has now reinstated himself to the starting position, it will be interesting to see how much he fares in his sixth season with the Niners.
