Tom Brady retired from professional football earlier this year. But his journey in the NFL continues, this time as he dons the hat of being a minority stakeholder of the Las Vegas Raiders. Brady joins hands with Mark Davis for the Raiders once again after also recently investing in the WNBA team the Las Vegas Aces. With the team moving on from QB Derek Carr after nine seasons following his trade to the New Orleans Saints, the Raiders have brought in a replacement. And this new QB also has experience playing alongside Brady during his New England Patriots Days. He was also considered the apparent heir to Brady’s throne at the Patriots. But with Brady continuing his performance, the Patriots decided to trade this promising backup.

From considering him to be an older brother to becoming good friends, this new QB was brought into the Raiders despite his season-ending injury from 2022. But with new updates surrounding the QB, one might start to question where it will turn out to be just another major cause of concern for the team. Was this a bad move to begin with altogether?

The 31-year-old Jimmy Garoppolo signed with the Raiders back in March from the San Francisco 49ers, as a potential replacement for Carr. But last season, while taking the field in place of the injured QB1 Trey Lance, he suffered from a left foot fracture in December. This led to him missing out on the rest of the season for the 49ers, giving room for Brock Purdy to shine. While doctors gave him two months for recovery and advised against surgery, the Raiders found out the necessity of a surgical procedure after finalizing the deal.

When Garoppolo failed his physical for the Raiders in March, it led to the team restructuring his contract. This led to the removal of the signing bonus. Apart from this, the contract also contains a clause that addresses his injury. It is a waiver and release clause that states that if the 31-year-old fails to pass the physical before the season starts, the team can move on from him at no cost. It also states that Jimmy Garoppolo acknowledges that he understands the risk of aggravating the injury by continuing to play, and can’t hold the franchise and league responsible.

To address the injuries, the QB also went under the knife in March.

What does Garoppolo’s future look like?

After his new contract, the QB underwent surgery to address the fracture on his left foot. This is the third time in his career that he has had to take the offseason as a recovery period. Prior to this, he also suffered from ankle injuries in 2020 and missed out on the 2018 season with injury as well. While HC Josh McDaniels is hopeful of Garoppolo’s recovery till training camp starts, it is still too early to say what the future holds for this QB in the league. But if he does not recover when the league starts, the team may decide to move on from their signing without any extra cost and implications.
