Roger Goodell has been the face of the NFL for a long time now. He became the league commissioner back in 2006 and has steered it to new heights during his almost 17 years at the helm. But how long will the longtime commissioner remain in the top job? Hours after giving the league its future stars, the 64-year-old has hinted at a massive update about his own future in the setup.

Reports have it that Goodell is close to an extension in his current role. If he does get it, that will take his tenure up to 2027. And if that happens, he will become the second-longest serving commissioner in the entire league history. He offered an answer to the burning question during the draft but it left more questions than answers in the minds of the football fanbase in the country.

Roger Goodell offered his stance on the extension of his role as the NFL commissioner. While stating that he loved his job, he also talked about the scenario where the extension does not happen. In that case, according to Goodell, he doesn’t think about tenure. That is hardly an assurance after he secured the future stars for the league in the 2023 NFL Draft.

“The good news is I love the job and I love what I’m doing. We have talked about an extension, and we’ll work towards that. If that’s possible, then great. If not, I’ve been really fortunate to be in this job. I’ve loved every day of it. I would love every day that I’m in it, but I don’t really think about the tenure. I think about the progress and the important challenges we have ahead,” Goodell said, according to Mike Florio, via Sports Business Daily.

ESPN reported last month that the NFL owners may finalize Goodell’s contract extension to make it the most lucrative deal given to any sports commissioner. So are his latest comments just a smokescreen to keep the fans guessing? Afterall, the NFL, under its current commissioner, has seen huge financial success.

When Roger Goodell took over as the NFL commissioner in 2006, the league was already popular in the US. But the last 17 years have seen it become the financial behemoth it is today. Case in point, the last team to go for a sale before Goodell came in went for $600 million. That is nothing compared to the recent Denver Broncos sale with the franchise going for $4.5 billion. Growth in team value of almost 800%. The Washington Commanders may be going at a value even higher than that.

He has also brought in massive media rights money into the league, making it the biggest in the world in terms of finances. So an extension might be smooth sailing if Goodell wants it. Jerry Jones doesn’t look like he will call his lawyers in for a lawsuit as he threatened to during the last contract extension talks in 2017.
