Patrick Mahomes became the latest NFL player to make TIME magazine’s list of most influential people for the year 2020. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has been grabbing headlines since becoming the first-choice in 2018. The Texas-born athlete had a record-breaking season that year as he threw 50 passing TDs equalling NFL legend Peyton Manning’s record.

Mahomes followed that up with an even better outing in 2019. The 25-year-old Chiefs star led his team to the Super Bowl LIV Trophy last year. They beat Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers in an epic game in Miami to clinch their first Lombardi Trophy since 1970. The quarterback was also named Super Bowl MVP for his magnificent performance in the fourth quarter.

 Derek Jeter pens a Pat Mahomes appreciation note in TIME magazine

Here’s what MLB Hall of Famer, Derek Jeter, wrote about Mahomes after his inclusion in the prestigious list.

“When Patrick Mahomes steps onto the football field, all eyes are drawn to him. It’s not just that his combination of athleticism, creativity and vision is fun to watch. What his play really showcases is his love of the game and the commitment he’s made to his teammates and coaches, and it’s clear that is the true foundation of his success,” Jeter wrote in the magazine.

Mahomes was rewarded with a multi-million contract in the 2020 offseason for his past exploits. As per reports, he penned a 10-year contract extension with the Chiefs worth around $450 million. He will receive another $50 million in performance-related bonuses.

His new deal ensures that he will remain in Missouri until 2031 at least. Mahomes’ contract extension with the Chiefs is one of the biggest sporting contracts of all time, which just proves his value to the league.
