The Kansas City Chiefs have dominated the NFL for the past two seasons, reaching the Super Bowl twice and winning it once. Their star players, Patrick Mahomes, and Travis Kelce, have been recognized as the best in the league, ranking first and fifth respectively in the NFL’s Top 100 Players list for the 2022 season. However, they are not the only Chiefs who made the list or the headlines.

One of their teammates, defensive end Chris Jones, surprised many by cracking the top 10, coming in at number 10. He jumped from number 52 last year to number 10 this year, showing his improvement and impact on the defense. But Jones also stirred up some controversy by praising Jalen Hurts, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback who lost Mahomes and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Kansas star Jones un-tick Patrick Mahomes

According to Jones’ statement, Hurts won his heart after a dazzling performance, running and throwing for touchdowns. Jones said that Hurts had the best performance in the Super Bowl that he had ever seen of a quarterback and that he “balled out”.

This statement may not sit well with some Chiefs fans, who felt that Jones might be disrespecting Mahomes, who had been voted as the best player in the league by his peers. Mahomes’ achievement of ranking first in the list lost some of its excitement due to Jones’ comments.

Whatever his motives were, Jones certainly made a splash with his ranking and his remarks. He joined Mahomes and Kelce as the Chiefs’ representatives in the top 10 of the NFL’s Top 100 Players list for the 2022 season. Kansas can only wonder if Jones was trying to get more leverage in his contract talks, or if he was genuinely impressed by Hurts.

Chris Jones’ contract extension issues

Jones had a stellar season in 2021, recording 7.5 sacks and 28 quarterback hits, while also being in contract negotiations with the team. Chris Jones signed a four-year, $80 million contract extension with the Chiefs in 2020. However, he is reportedly unhappy with his current deal and wants to be paid like the best defensive player in the league, Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams, who makes $22.5 million per year.

Jones has been holding out on the Chiefs’ offseason activities and preseason games, hoping to get a new contract or a trade to another team. He has not reported to the team’s training camp, which started on July 23. He is subject to fines of $50,000 per day for missing camp.

The Chiefs’ GM Brett Veach has said that they have “no intentions” of trading Jones and that he deserves a big contract. As of now, the contract controversy between Jones and the Chiefs is not settled. Jones could either end his holdout and play under his current contract, which pays him $19.5 million in 2023.
