Cam Akers entered the 2020 NFL Draft as one of the top running back prospects. Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams eventually drafted him in the second round (52nd overall). In his final ACC season playing for Florida State, Akers rushed for 1,144 yards with 14 rushing touchdowns.

Akers also had an additional 225 receiving yards with 4 receiving touchdowns. However, no one could have predicted his rise to prominence with the Rams in 2020. On 145 rush attempts, Akers had 625 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns for the Rams in 13 games. Coach McVay insists that the future is bright for the former U.S. Army Player of the Year Award winner.

In a recent interview, coach McVay was all praise for the 21-year-old running back ahead of a do-or-die 2021 NFL season. He said, “You saw Darrell Henderson step up, Malcolm Brown was really consistent throughout the year, but Cam hit his stride at the right moments.”

“You could see he’s always had a real and authentic confidence, but then as he’s getting more and more comfortable for the different ways that we were able to utilize him, I think he can come alive in the pass game. I think he can continue to play at a high level. Really, I think he’s an every-down back. I think he’s a special player,” McVay said via NFL Network earlier this week.

After bringing in highly talented QB Matthew Stafford earlier this year, the Rams are one of the outside favorites to make the Super Bowl in 2021. They have arguably the best defense in the league, an experienced quarterback, a lethal wideout corps. If youngsters like Cam Akers step up, the sky is the limit for coach McVay and his star-studded squad.
