As reported by Journal Now, Alexis Restrepo, a fourth-year M.D. student at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, has been honored with a prestigious opportunity. Among 32 exceptional medical students hailing from 19 renowned medical schools nationwide, she has been selected to participate in the esteemed NFL’s Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative.

Commencing on August 7th, Restrepo will embark on a transformative one-month clinical rotation with the illustrious Carolina Panthers. During her time with the team, she will have the privilege of closely observing and actively contributing to the care of the players.

Under the direct supervision of the team physicians, including those affiliated with Atrium Health, the official healthcare provider of the Carolina Panthers, and the athletic trainers, Alexis Restrepo’s experience promises to be both enriching and transformative. At WFU, Restrepo gained valuable experience in sports medicine through her orthopedic surgery clerkship. She also conducted research focused on rehabilitation after bicep tendon surgery and volunteered at local high school football games.

The NFL Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative, launched in 2022, aims to promote sports medicine careers among students from diverse backgrounds. This program offers medical students the opportunity to complete clinical rotations with NFL club medical staff across the league.

Participants will gain valuable insights into return-to-play guidelines and on-field treatment considerations for NFL players. The initiative’s ultimate goal is to increase and diversify the pool of students interested in sports medicine careers, contributing to greater diversity within NFL teams’ medical staff.

In the previous year, the program chose 14 students to undertake clinical rotations with NFL club medical staff. Now that’s a thoughtful way to diversify!
