In the year 2000, the Patriots gave the key to their franchise to a person named Bill Belichick, who became arguably the greatest NFL head coach of all time. With Tom Brady, he won 6 Super Bowl titles and became the most successful coach of all time. However, there’s still one record he still has not achieved, i.e. the most wins as a head coach. If he gets 19 more wins, the 70-year-old coach will surpass the record held by the legendary head coach Don Shula. However, as per Patriots insider Tom E. Curran, Belichick might not get a chance to break this record.

It is worth noting that Belichick had a pretty poor last season with the Patriots, as he failed to reach the playoffs. After Brady’s departure, he doesn’t have a single win in the playoffs. Safe to say, this season could be pretty vital for Belichick, in terms of his future with the Patriots.

What’s in Bill Belichick’s future?

During the latest episode of the ‘Pat McAfee Show’, Patriots insider Curran told McAfee about CEO Robert Kraft’s thought process regarding Belichick becoming the winningest coach of all time. As per him, Belichick’s future has become a hot topic of conversation in the Patriots’ camp.

Many people asked Kraft whether he will fire Belichick if they have another poor season in 2023 or if he would allow the legendary coach to break Shula’s record. As per Curran, Robert (Kraft) said, ‘look, I want to see him break Don Shula’s record but we don’t have our players chasing personal awards.

“He also said…’ it’s a performance-based business, it’s a business and we need success’. He expects success. So, it might not be Bill’s decision,” Curran further said about Belichick’s situation with the Patriots. Meanwhile, Belichick recently garnered some criticism for an act of nepotism, regarding the appointment of his son as safeties coach back in 2016. Now, his position is under scrutiny, as the 2023 season could be a make-or-break season for the legendary Patriots coach.

Have the Patriots found Belichick’s successor?

During a recent interview with the NFL Network, Kraft picked the linebacker’s coach Jerod Mayo as a ‘strong candidate to replace Belichick as the head coach of the Patriots. “He’s definitely a strong candidate to be the heir apparent, but we have some other good people in our system,” Kraft said.

While talking to Mike Florio of NBC Sports on the Patriots Talk Podcast, Curran said that Belichick will move on to an advisory role after 2024 and Mayo will most likely take over as the HC of the New England franchise.

As mentioned earlier, Belichick just needs 19 more wins to break Shula’s record, and he needs at least 2 seasons to do it. However, it will be interesting to see if he stays Patriots’ coach after the 2023 season. What do you think? Is Belichick’s time in the sun over or are there a few more seasons left for him to shine?
