Mike Florio Says DK Metcalf Needs to Know If Seattle Seahawks Are “Gonna Take Care Of Him Financially”

The Seattle Seahawks recently concluded their three-day offseason minicamp with the entire squad. The camp was a way of bringing together old and new players of the team in order to work as a cohesive unit. It also allowed coaches to assess the players and start building towards the upcoming season. But WR DK Metcalf was conspicuous by his absence from the camp.

However, as head coach Pete Carroll faced the cameras post the camp, one thing everyone wanted to know was where was DK Metcalf? Was he not present because of ongoing issues with his contract? Analyst Mike Florio tried to analyze why the WR was absent from the team camp.

Mike Florio is of the opinion that Metcalf’s absence is certainly because of his contract negotiation. But it is also up to the team to make him feel comfortable playing at the club. He said, “I just think he needs to know if they’re not gonna take care of him financially, he needs to know. He’s gonna be in a position to have the kind of year that allows him to get a market contract next year.”

He also said that the Seahawks should definitely decide how they want to play the WR. If they want him to stay longer, they should provide financial stability to him, similar to other WRs in the league. If they do not require him in the setup, they must facilitate his season to ensure he gets a market contract the following year.

What’s happening between DK Metcalf and the Seahawks?

Answering questions about Metcalf, Carroll said it was “a decision that he had to make.” He was referring to the WR’s decision to skip the camp because of his contract situation with the franchise. He said he’d hoped to have the WR in camp, but it was unfortunate that he wasn’t.

Carroll added, “We missed him. He had done a nice job of contributing, being a part of everything we had done, and then he just is not here. So I can’t say much about for what he hasn’t done here, but we’d love to have him with us.”

The Seahawks drafted Metcalf in 2019, and currently, he is in the final year of his rookie contract. Over his three years with the team, he has a combined 216 catches for 3,170 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Despite the WR’s absence and the delay in his contract discussion, HC Carroll and fans remain hopeful that the WR would both play for the Seahawks this season and get a longer-term contract with the franchise.
