In the NFL, rivalries have consistently fueled passions and sparked conversations. Yet, there are moments when they transcend into banter. This exactly happened between Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval and Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.

In the previous season, Pureval made some light-hearted comments about Mahomes after their victory in a match. However, their roles reversed when Mahomes’ team defeated them, and the 27-year-old quarterback playfully responded to the Mayor, sparking a friendly dispute between them. As the NFL is all set to release the complete schedule for the 2023 regular season on Thursday night, a few selected matchups were revealed on Wednesday. This scheduled release prompted Cincinnati Bengals‘ Mayor and the team’s OT Orlando Brown Jr. to come up with something witty, especially targeting Mahomes.

NFL recently released matchup schedules in which Miami Dolphins will play against Aaron Rodgers’ led team, New York Jets, at 3 P.M. on November 24. The second matchup will be on December 25 with New York Giants vs. Philadelphia Eagles at 4:30 P.M. And, the next match will be played between Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs on the eve of New Year, i.e. December 31 (week 17) at 4:25 P.M.

Following this, Cincinnati Mayor Pureval and Brown Jr. took to social media to share a playful video teasing the upcoming match. In the video, Brown Jr. is seen holding a phone and recording Pureval’s statement. “The Bengals play the Chiefs in Week 17,” Pureval says. He adds, “And I’ve got nothing else to add,” in a playful manner. In the final moments of the video, Pureval asks Brown Jr. for his opinion on the video, to which he responds, “It’s better than the last one,” possibly alluding to the previous season’s comment about Mahomes.

Mahomes and Pureval’s clash during the previous season

In anticipation of the previous year’s game, Pureval shared a “WHO DEY proclamation” on his Twitter account. Taking into account the previous match, he commented on his quarterback, Joe Burrow’s performance and directed a statement toward Mahomes. In his tweet, Pureval highlighted that in the previous year’s game, his team scored more points than the Chiefs, securing the victory. He playfully added, “Whereas Joseph Lee Burrow… who’s 3-0 against Mahomes has been asked by officials to take a paternity test to confirm whether or not he’s his father.

However, the Chiefs and Mahomes emerged victorious in that match. Mahomes took the opportunity to respond, stating, “I understand he’s the mayor of Cincinnati, so he’s got to think about something.” He continued, “You just have to play the football game and let your play do the talking.” Since then, a friendly argument has ensued between them. After the recently scheduled release of the upcoming matches, the anticipation is reaching new heights. Not one to back down, the Cincinnati Mayor seized the opportunity to reignite the playful rivalry.
