The heart-wrenching injury of the Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin on Monday Night Football shocked the entire world, as he has been battling with his life at the moment. During the first quarter of the game between the Bills and the Bengals, Hamlin collapsed on the ground after a collision with the Bengals’ wide receiver Tee Higgins. Then the medical personnel treated him on the field before transporting him to a hospital. As he is still in critical condition, a medical expert recently discussed what exactly happened with the Bills’ safety.

Notably, the medical personnel rushed to the scene, and their quick actions may have saved Hamlin’s life. He looked unconscious on the ground, and the medical team had to use a defibrillator to bring him back to life. While talking to ABC News, Dr. Anthony Cardello detailed some horrific information, as the fans are sending their continuous prayers for Hamlin.

Dr. Cardello said, “This was traumatic and we see that hit happened in that upper chest area. And there are a couple of things that could happen under this scenario.”

The doctor ruled out a spinal cord injury because Hamlin got back up before falling down to the ground. In his opinion, it was a cardiac injury. “When you have a cardiac injury, a couple of things could happen with a large enough hit to the anterior chest, you can transect the aorta, the large blood vessel coming out of that heart. The third thing we’re thinking about, it’s called the R-on-T phenomenon. This is a phenomenon that when the heart is going between its beats, as that heart is depolarizing, and then repolarizing,” Dr. Cardello further said. 

According to the Doctor, staying down for 9 to 10 minutes was worrisome because he could suffer significant brain damage during that time. However, Dr. Cardello believed the age is on Hamlin’s side and he could recover from this because he is a highly conditioned athlete.

After the doctor’s comments, many fans in the YouTube comment section prayed for the young safety. One person wrote, “My god This is horrible. Can you imagine being his parents being so proud their boy is in the NFL only to take a once in a career unlucky hit like that.“

Another fan felt happy to see both Bills and Bengals fans coming together to support the young player. One user wrote, “I shed tears for this young man.”

“My heart hurts because I saw him hug his family members on the sideline before the game started,” one fan became emotional while writing this. Not only the Bengals or the Bills fans, but many other teams’ fans also showed support and are praying for the young man’s speedy recovery.

According to the latest reports, Hamlin showed signs of improvement; however, he is still in the ICU in critical condition.
