The star cornerback Malcolm Butler has found his way back to the New England Patriots after almost five years. Last time, things did not end on good terms between both parties. But it seems like time heals all wounds, and Butler is ready to run it back with the Pats. 

The cornerback has been very successful during his first stay in New England. But an unfortunate benching and loss at the Super Bowl made Butler find his way out of the franchise. Nobody expected to see the CB ever return to New England. The news was a shock for many fans.

The New England Patriots signed Malcolm Butler in 2014 after he became an undrafted free agent that year. He played with the Pats’ for four seasons. Butler was very successful in his first run with the franchise. He got selected for the New England Patriots 2010s All-Decade Team.

Butler won two Super Bowls with Tom Brady and the Patriots. He even got selected in the 2016 Pro Bowl second team. The cornerback is responsible for one of the greatest defensive plays in the history of the NFL. It was the Super Bowl XLIX game between the Eagles and the Patriots. The game was very close. Later in the fourth quarter, Russell Wilson was trying to steal the game, but Butler prevented a go-ahead touchdown. It ensures the Patriots win.

The story was different in the 2018 Super Bowl game against the Eagles. The cornerback was infamously benched during the game. Fans were confused about this decision. The Patriots lost the game. Tension rose between the athlete and the franchise. Butler signed with the Tennessee Titans in the following season. Continuing the tradition of big ticket agents leaving or getting cut from the dynastical Patriots. 

Running it back with the Pats 

After the infamous benching, nobody expected to see Malcolm Butler ever returning to the New England Patriots. The athlete even retired before the 2021 campaign. But he unretired this spring and surprised everyone with his return to New England. 

“One thing I learned is you never burn your bridges,” Butler said. “…Whatever my role is, that’s what I’ll make it.” It was a shocking move, but New England fans are excited to see one of their favorite defensive players return. It will be interesting to see how much he has left in the tank. And how Bill Belichick leverages his abilities on the field.
