New England Patriots Legend Set to Take Retirement Decision or Continue 3x Super Bowl Winning Career

The 35-year-old safety, Devin McCourty, has been playing for the New England Patriots for 13 years. Notably, the Patriots drafted him in 2010. Since then, he has won 3 Super Bowls with them. Currently, McCourty is in two minds about his future with the Patriots whether to retire or come back to play his 14th season with the team.
In ‘The Patriots Report’ podcast, McCourty talked to Chris Price about making a decision about his future. According to him, in two weeks’ time, before the free agency, he will inform the Patriots about his decision.

In the podcast, McCourty said, “I’ve gone back and forth… I think the good thing is I actually have a vacation coming up with the family, and then I’m going to go hang out with [Jason McCourty] for a week. I think just being able to get away from football, especially as you kind of get older, I think it helps you put things in perspective, doing other things.“

Talking about announcing his decision before free agency, the Patriots’ safety said, “It’ll be early March, second week in March… And we’ll start to, I think for me and my wife, decide and plan what the next year looks like. I think that’s around the time where free agency will be coming up, so it’ll be the right time to really start digging in and make a decision.“

Notably, he also talked about spending time with his brother Jason, who is currently working as an analyst for the NFL Network’s ‘Good Morning Football. He’s currently looking for what’s best for his family. If he decides to retire, he could easily become an analyst like his brother. However, he still thinks he has a year of football left in him. Last season, he recorded 71 tackles in Bill Belichick’s secondary unit.
Another Patriots veteran will return to the team for his 16th season

While McCourty is in a dilemma about his future, another veteran in the league, Matthew Slater, announced that he will return to play his 16th season with the Patriots. Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft showed great appreciation for Slater, the special teams’ captain is returning once again, which showed that he still has tremendous football drive even at the age of 37.

Belichick also expressed his happiness regarding Slater’s return to the team. Earlier, he already compared Slater with Tom Brady and other Goats of the NFL. Now, if McCourty also does the same thing, it would be extra pleasing for the head coach, as he wants to push for the playoffs this season after failing to qualify in the 2022 season.
