Cam Newton and the New England Patriots are having a poor season this year. They have a 6-7 record in the AFC this year and look set to miss the Playoffs this year. For a serial winner like Bill Belichick, this is a tough pill to swallow.

NFL analyst Stephen A. Smith spoke on First Take about the New England Patriots. He proclaimed that he lost faith in star quarterback, Cam Newton.

“Well, I can’t knock that when you bring Bill Belichick into the equation. Because we all know he does have rookie quarterbacks for lunch and we get all of that.

“And I take no pleasure in saying this because I love the guy personally. I’ve lost faith in Cam. They can’t throw the football.”

Smith referred to his poor statistics this season. “They’ve got the 26th ranked offense, the 29th ranked passing attack. Cam Newton is not an accurate thrower of the football and yeah, he’s completed 66% of his passes, we’ll give him credit for that.

“He’s got 5 touchdowns, 10 interceptions on the season. These are just not impressive numbers. I’ve watched him throw the football. I’m not impressed.”

Smith noted that Miami coach Brian Flores can offer a significant challenge to Belichick, especially because he is a protege of his. “And when that is going up against the #2 ranked defense in the entire NFL, led by a guy who is a disciple of Bill Belichick, I think that the same thing you could say about Bill Belichick and how he could have somebody for lunch.

“Well, if you’re Brian Flores, and you’re from that Bill Belichick tree and you can see what Cam Newton is doing combined with what you know Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels like to do, imagine how that could end up working out for you.”

Smith concluded that he doesn’t expect the game against the Dolphins to go well for Cam Newton, and he thinks he is in trouble. “I just see this as being a bad afternoon for Cam in terms of throwing the football.

“The defense for Miami is real, I don’t think they can be underestimated. And the fact that they’re going against a relatively inaccurate passer in Cam Newton, I think it spells trouble for Cam Newton. My faith would be in Tua by default.”

Despite their poor form, it remains to be seen how the Patriots fare against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cam Newton can redeem himself with a good performance against the Miami Dolphins. But it will not be an easy task.
