The San Francisco 49ers sent shockwaves through the NFL earlier this offseason when they traded their 12th pick of this season’s draft, a 2022 third-round pick and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023, for the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

And their decision to do so was also made very clear. They were in the market for a quarterback. Despite making a trip to Super Bowl LIV with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the side felt they needed an upgrade.

And that they did by drafting quarterback Trey Lance. The rookie has a high ceiling and could soon take the league by storm thanks to his playmaking abilities.

But for now, he will have to compete with Jimmy G for the starting quarterback role. While Garoppolo is likely to be the starting quarterback for the Niners come Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season, the expectation is that Lance will take over the mantle soon.

But one NFL commentator feels that the situation could end up being slightly different on the west coast.

Jimmy G the long-term starter over Trey Lance

During a segment of the Rich Eisen Show, NFL commentator Ben Lyons discussed about the quarterback scenario in San Francisco. And boy did he deliver a hot take.

NFL Veteran Feels This Rookie QB Is the Closest Thing to Aaron Rodgers

“Jimmy G quarterback of the future in San Francisco. I think he’s the long term quarterback there. They might not know that now. He might not know that now. But I think every 49ers fan should be rooting for Jimmy G to be the long term quarterback there,” said Lyons.

Lyons further went on state as to why he feels that should be the case.

“He’s only 29 years old, when he’s healthy he’s won. He’s proven that. Went to a Super Bowl, 24-8 as a starter, 29-years-old, he’s your quarterback of the future. Why not put your arms around him embrace him?”

Furthermore, Lyon suggested that the hype for rookie QB Trey Lance was being blown out of proportion. “The idea of Trey Lance right now is better than Trey Lance,” he said.
