NFL Films’ new plan

The New Jersey-based NFL Films has come up with a plan to make the game reach a wider audience. Talking to the Insider, NFL Films senior director Ross Ketover said the organization is planning an “MCU-like” foray into the movie business with a number of films and TV shows lined up. He also said that the film division of the league will partner with stars like Tom Brady and Ronda Rousey.

“We have a sport that is most akin to Hollywood. We can help find those stories and help them get made, whether it’s streaming series, television or feature movies,” Ketover said.

“The process we are in now, is … what partners can we find and who sees the creative world in a similar way that we here at NFL Films do — and the stories that we want told,” he added.

Till now, most of the division’s work has been around unscripted films. But according to this plan, there will be space for scripted movies as well. The league will be looking at players and agents who can bring their stories forward.

“There are a lot of great stories to tell, not just unscripted but scripted,” said Ketover.

Ketover also pointed out that NFL Films never had a show on Food Network before. According to him, the league is looking to do new things in new places. Hence, the show on the Food Network.

The League’s growth plan

The NFL is the most profitable sports league in the world. Its 2021 revenue has been pegged at $18 billion. But the league commissioner Roger Goodell is not content with this figure. He plans to increase the league’s revenue to $25 billion in five years, i.e. till 2027.

The plan by the league’s film division is the one that can help it achieve its revenue goals. The division is not represented by a talent agency yet. It also doesn’t have any agreement of exclusivity with anyone in Hollywood. But according to Ketover, it may soon be the reality. Imagine a biopic of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Tom Brady.

If NFL Films does manage to put such a plan into action, it could help the sport on a global stage. There is no dearth of possibilities if this plan is actually put into motion.
