

The NFL introduces a great initiative for encouraging black medical students to take up sports medicine as a professional career option. The league management, which includes the NFL Physicians Society (NFLPS) and the Professional Football Athletic Trainer Society (PFATS) has partnered with Meharry Medical College to include students as a part of the NFL teams for the 2022 season. The step is taken to diversify the pipeline of sports medicine. At the same time improving the chances of students opting for this field.

This initiative will have students from four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). A total of 16 students are expected to take part in the inaugural season, divided into groups of two for eighth NFL clubs.
Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans, and Washington Commanders are the participating franchises. Next year, i.e 2023, the league plans to expand the initiative with other medical institutions and colleges.

With this decision enforced, the students will have an opportunity to work alongside the NFL medical staff for one month. They will participate in extensive clinical trials and can reap the benefits of first-hand experience in this evolving medical space.

The four colleges involved in this program include Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Howard University College of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Meharry Medical College.
NFL Commissioner vows to introduce diversity across roles
This new decision taken by the top brass of the NFL will improve the credibility and equality of the organization. “Increasing diversity across every role in our league and at our clubs is essential. Diversity makes us stronger,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

“We have an opportunity to help increase the pipeline of diverse sports medicine professionals, which is imperative for us as a league. This initiative is an example of how we can lend our platform for societal benefit. I’m proud that our league can help inspire the next generation of sports medicine professionals.” he added to his statement. According to a recent study, the total number of black medical students in the entire medical population comprises only 7.3%.
With this move, both NFL and college students will get a chance to explore the field of sports medicine and diversify its scope even more in the future.
