A revisit to the Jock Tax
So much buzz around Aaron Rodgers has brought the almost forgotten ‘Jock Tax’ on the forefront. According to reports, the Packers QB had to shell out almost half-a-million dollars due to this tax that only applies to people associated with sports. And the tax itself has an interesting story behind it.
The story of the tax goes back to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls when they humiliated the Los Angeles Lakers 4-1 in the 1991 NBA Finals. The team partied for a few days in Los Angeles after the game. And the state of California taxed the NBA legend for it despite him not being a resident of California. Things spiraled after the state of Illinois came with what they called ‘Michael Jordan’s revenge’ policy. Under this, they taxed any athlete that came to play in Illinois from California.
