It’s a tall task to make it as a professional athlete, and only a chosen few actually make that jump. And then there are those legends, who showcase their dominance in not one but two competitive sports. Despite his illustrious NFL and MLB career being left behind, Deion Sanders has remained relevant in modern times, partly due to his coaching persona. And while most of us perceive Sanders as this ‘invincible’ individual, even Coach Prime has had to face his fair share of humiliations on the field.

Deion Sanders has changed the whole outlook surrounding the Colorado football team. As many existing players failed to meet Coach Prime’s standards, changes in the roster were expected to be made. With Sanders at the helm, the Colorado players will embark on a learning experience, owing to years of experience Coach Prime has garnered. But there have been several stumbles along the way for Deion Sanders as well, and one particular play is still a pivotal point of discussion.

The infamous Deion Sanders-Bo Jackson showdown

When it comes to two sports athletes, Deion Sanders, and Bo Jackson stand at the top. However, only one of these legends earned himself All-Star honors in both the NFL and the MLB, Bo Jackson. While the “Bo Knows” commercials in 1990 were a direct reflection of his greatness, the 1985 Heisman Trophy had to run through a couple of highly touted talents to earn that reputation. The Auburn University legend was a force to be feared, and a young Deion Sanders certainly got a taste of that during his freshman year with Florida State. Recently, an infamous stiff-arm encounter between Sanders and Jackson has resurfaced, and it’s refreshing to watch these legends going at each other relentlessly.

Both Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson embodied the term ‘freak athlete’, years before it was even coined. Over the years, there have been several debates on who was the better athlete, and fans certainly gave Jackson the edge. ESPN even honored the legend by naming him the Greatest Athlete of All Time, and while Sanders was right up in that conversation, maybe the stiff arm play had something to do with the final verdict.

Deion Sanders’ account of the infamous play

While Bo Jackson tends to shy away from the public light, Deion Sanders has always been upfront and honest about his past, present, and the potential future. Needless to say, the Deion Sanders-Bo Jackson showdown etched itself in the memories of avid football fans, and Sanders has been asked about it on quite a few occasions. Speaking during an appearance on 7 Figure Squad, Coach Prime illuminated the crowd on his side of the story, and the details are rather hilarious.

As a freshman, I started right away, man against Auburn and Bo Jackson. I remember his play like it was yesterday,  It was a timeout TV timeout. And coming off the timeout he went to the crowd and like got them up. I was playing left corner and there was a sweep to his left away from me. And Bo broke and ran over three, four people. And I went and got him, ran up on him like a Lamborghini. And when I got there, Bo put his hand on my helmet and he prayed for me said I just want this guy to be great in the name of Jesus. It pushed me all down and guess what I was great in the name of Jesus. And he went down and scored a touchdown,” Coach Prime remembered.

Despite the play being labeled as ‘humiliating’, Deion Sanders continues appreciating and talking about the greatness of Bo Jackson. Even though the two have had multiple faceoffs both on the football field and the baseball ground, the level of respect they share should act as an example for the younger athletes, and hopefully, we will see another Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders in the future.
