The NFL is easily the biggest sports league in the world. It is worth up to $142 Billion and is a staggering money-making industry. But as the league keeps getting richer and richer, their stinginess with perhaps their most important employees continues to baffle sports fans across the world. That’s right, it’s about the age-old problem of underpaid referees. 

Over the years, there have been many questions raised to Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league about not guaranteeing full-time jobs to their officials. Despite the astronomical wealth of the NFL, these officials, who work tirelessly to maintain the integrity of the game, are grossly underpaid and forced to juggle their roles as part-time employees. With the rising concern surrounding the accuracy of referees, the NFL has a major problem at hand. 

The dual lives of NFL officials

Over the course of a season, with nearly 16 games per week, the NFL has 17 fully committed crews to officiate their games. But the shocking reality behind these officials is that they are mere part-time workers for the league. During the week, these officials moonlight in regular jobs just like the rest of us. 

The league has some of its premier referees working jobs as Ranchers, Teachers, Firefighters, and Bankers, amongst a bevy of other jobs. While fans have been questioning the NFL’s unwillingness to convert these officials into full-time workers at the league, even NFL Analyst Pat McAfee took to his show as he discussed these issues.

With growing concern surrounding the NFLs officiating with a number of controversial calls over the last few years, it’s baffling to think that the officials handling these primetime games enter the field after a week of 9-5’s. Roger Goodell and the league need to control this problem before a blown call brings the league’s policies to a halt. 

The need for full-time officials

The current situation, where NFL officials maintain other jobs, is far from ideal. The stakes are too high in professional football for the league to be risking its games by making their officials work multiple jobs instead of focusing on their careers as a referee. The second major concern is also the pay of its officials. 

On average, an NFL referee makes up to $205,000 annually, as per Sporting News. Even the top-paid officials in the league earn just a tad above the average with a salary of $250,000.

Those numbers are a far cry from the salary of officials in other professional leagues such as the NBA, which pays its officials up to $550,000 annually, including healthcare, travel, and retirement benefits. With the spotlight on officiating at an all-time high, after years of blown calls in crucial moments altering the course of football history, the NFL needs to fix this problem ASAP.
