Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be the most valuable player for the franchise, if not the NFL, for years to come. The franchise has been taking drastic steps to ensure the future of the team. It involves stopping Mahomes from being able to play some sports with the risk of injuries. Among the few things that have been hampered due to his NFL career have been his ability to play pickup basketball outdoors.
In 2019, Mahomes was playing pickup basketball. It was a sport he holds a lot of affinity towards and was caught on camera. He was doing impressive dribble moves to the delight of fans. However, the video somehow made its way to popular media outlets, and Mahomes was told not to play the sport. The sport was something that the Chiefs felt was a gamble to let their starting QB play and risk injuring himself.

During a GQ Sports fan Q&A, Mahomes reveals, stating, “So I was playing pickup basketball, got posted online. I got a call from my GM Brett Veach, and it wasn’t like, “You can’t play.” But it was like, “I really would not like you to play.” So when it comes from that guy, it’s almost like you can’t play. I knew when they posted the video I was going to get in trouble because they tagged Bleacher Report.” The Chiefs QB holds a lot of respect for the franchise and its supporters. He has since abandoned playing the sport.

While Mahomes knew he was in trouble, the franchise was trying to protect their big-money investment. Mahomes signed a 10-year contract with the team in 2020, valued at more than $450 million. He is an integral part of the Chiefs’ offense. Despite losing star WR Tyreek Hill this offseason, the franchise is all in on Mahomes. They will be depending on his production to help them win games.
