“Only time will tell” – Deshaun Watson Talks About His Contract Extension

The 2017 draft class gave us some impressive quarterbacks. Amongst these quarterbacks, MVP Patrick Mahomes isn’t the only one whose contract is nearing expiry. Other top picks, like Deshaun Watson, are also to begin negotiations sometime soon.

Optimism is Key

Deshaun Watson, Quarterback for the Houston Texans, will be out of a contract by 2022. The team recently exercised their option to extend the contract for Watson’s fifth year there. He is expected to strike a deal that would keep him the Texans’ franchise quarterback for years to come.

The Houston team will most likely sign a contract with the two-time Pro Bowler before Patrick Mahomes announces his cash-heavy deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. This way, they will protect themselves from bleeding from their pockets excessively.

The double AFC South Champion, however, doesn’t seem to be too worked up about his contract. He isn’t stressing about a timeline and is optimistic that something will get done. “They are going to make sure they handle it well,” Watson said. “My main focus is just being the best teammate, best leader, best quarterback I can be, and whenever that time comes with my agent and the organization, the time is going to be right.

So far in his career, Deshaun has thrown 9,716 passing yards and 71 touchdowns. With social distancing becoming the norm, the quarterback hasn’t been able to be out in the field and is keeping in touch with his team through virtual meetings. He working to be able to lead the Texans offense.

Laremy Tunsil’s acquisition as the Texan’s offensive tackle has benefitted Watson immensely. It was an indication that the team is ready to shell out the big bucks to protect its franchise quarterback.

Watson is, however, expected to make slightly over $2 million this year. While this might not be the case for long, the Texans will be happier while it lasts.

ESPN First Take’s, Stephen A. Smith suggested that Watson should demand to be traded off because the Texans’ Head Coach, Bill O’Brien doesn’t know what he is doing as an executive.

Deshaun seems happy to be where he is at the moment and doesn’t seem to want to be playing for another team.
