Recently, football YouTuber KTL admitted that Alex Smith has always been overshadowed throughout his career. The man clearly had talent as he was in first NFL Draft pick in 2005. Many viewed him as a top prospect in the NFL draft and when the San Francisco 49ers roped him, they were in revamp mode.

Interestingly, the choice was between himself and Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was a born and raised Californian and the odds were stacked against Smith. However, the 49ers evidently decided that Smith was more of their speed. Interestingly, the Aaron Rodgers narrative overshadowed Smith’s recruitment into the 49ers.

Sadly his rookie season was fairly underwhelming, starting only seven games, with 11 kicks and one touchdown. In his second season though, he became a regular starter, but was soon relegated to sporadic appearances for the next few years. He wasn’t a fan favourite among the 49ers faithful. In fact, he often faced thousands of boos when he played.

Fortunately, Smith witnessed a change of fortune when Jim Harbaugh became the head coach. Against the wishes of the fans, Harbaugh elected to keep the misfiring Alex Smith, and soon they were laughing on the other side of their faces. In 2011, he started all 16 games and passed for nearly 3000 yards. In the same year, he helped guide the team to the playoffs.

In the 2012 season, the 49ers continued their good form and all was well for Smith. Unfortunately, a game against the St Louis Rams dented everything for Smith, courtesy a concussion.
