Panthers HC Matt Rhule Reveals Big on Rumors of Coach Sean Payton Replacing Him in Carolina

Since Sean Payton left the head coach position at the New Orleans Saints, he has been a subject of interest for multiple teams. There have been major talks of him becoming the next head coach of the Carolina Panthers; a team that has been struggling for a good amount of time now.
The Panthers had an abysmal record of 5-12 last season. There have been major concerns about the quarterback position of the team. Sam Darnold hasn’t turned out to be the type of player the franchise expected. Moreover, the return of Cam Newton didn’t help them either. As a result, they struggled throughout the course of last season.

When the team performs badly, usually the pressure is on the head coach. Similarly, the position of the Panthers’ head coach, Matt Rhule, is in jeopardy. There have been constant rumors about Sean Payton being the man to replace Rhule in Carolina. However, Matt Rhule has dismissed all of them.
Rhule said, “With regards to that report, first I heard of it was Dave called me and told me that it was going to come out. They had called him, that there was nothing to it. I know Dave Tepper well enough to believe he wouldn’t be talking to another coach right now. “

He added, “He came to my house two-and-a-half years ago and told me this is a five-year rebuild. That’s what he said to me. He convinced me then to come be a part of it and build it with him. We’re not where we want to be. I don’t think it’s gonna take five years. I don’t want it to take five years, but those are the words he said to me.”

Sean Payton left the New Orleans Saints head coach position after being there for 16 seasons. He led them to three NFC Championship games and also helped them clinch Super Bowl XLIV. However, Drew Brees played a huge part in it. He was a quality quarterback, and Sean made the team perform alongside him.

Since Drew Brees retired, the Saints haven’t been as good as they were in the past. As a result, Sean Payton stepped away at the right time. He is a quality head coach, and other teams are continuously making efforts to pursue him.

There had been multiple talks of him being the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys next season. Furthermore, he was tipped to land in Miami, to coach the Dolphins with Tom Brady as his quarterback. However, that move fell through after the Brian Flores lawsuit. Nevertheless, Payton is still among the top head coaches in the league, and many teams will continue to pursue him after his 1-year break from football gets over.
