But it’s not the present competition that’s part of the discussion here. It’s the probable future. Certain to some. Brock Purdy. And Steve Young thinks Purdy and Pat are quite similar.

The former Super Bowl-winning 49ers QB thought of a young Patrick Mahomes when he saw Brock Purdy pulling the Niners out of the ditch without Jimmy G. And the NFL world has not received the comparison gracefully. Especially after taking Mahomes’ mammoth 2018 season into account.

Steve Young brought up an incredible Mahomes play from 2018.

Steve Young’s support for his former franchise’s quarterback is not unjustified and absurd despite the bias. “The kid has the force. It’s something about how he is present on the field and can handle all the inputs and the data. And still, put out with his accuracy and his mind is clear,” Young said on KNBR’s 104.5 FM.

To some, Patrick Mahomes’ rookie season is not that easy to match

The Kansas City Chiefs QB had over 5000 passing yards in 2018, along with 50 touchdowns. The 5x Pro Bowler finished his first year with a passer rating of 113.8. And some fans think Steve Young was out of his mind to compare rookie Pat and Purdy.

Brock Purdy has made an impressive resume for himself winning the 5 games he has started this season. The San Francisco 49ers were worried about the season after Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot mid-season. However, Purdy has 10 touchdowns in his last 5 games and has above 170 yards of passing in each game with four 200-yard-plus games. His first game was perhaps his most impressive display where he faced Tom Brady, who himself has quite a similar starting story.

Brock still has to play a full season and show his true grit. However, after Patrick Mahomes won the NFL MVP in his first starting QB year, it’s hard to see the entire truth in Steve Young’s statement.
