Day one of the legal tampering period in the NFL free agency just ended. And Denver Broncos seem to lead the franchises in first-day spending. It seems the top brass of the team is serious about their offense and want to provide their QB with all the weapons that they can. Former Colts punter Pat McAfee broke down the moves Denver made, giving the fans a glimpse of what head coach Sean Payton was thinking.

This off-season has seen a few big names move already. Derek Carr to the Saints, Jimmy G to the Raiders, and perennial Pro Bowler Jalen Ramsey joining the offense-loaded Miami Dolphins have been the highlights up until now. However, the Broncos splurged major cash to get their big names as well.

Sean Payton wants everything

The Walter-Penner Family Ownership Group, which owns the Broncos, took a $219 million hit on the first tampering day of the free agency. They lead the Chicago Bears, who spent the second-most on Day 1 after trading their first-pick in the draft for two first-round picks and wide receiver DJ Moore.

“Payton said I need f—ing new everything,” McAfee said of Sean’s current mindset on his show, ‘The Pat McAfee Show’. And Broncos Nation surely got what they needed.

Where did all the $219 million go?

The Broncos are coming off the 2022 season with the fewest points per game on the board, arguably with one of the worst offenses led by quarterback Russell Wilson. And Payton wants more protection for his QB, who got sacked a career-high 55 times in his first year with the Broncos.

Denver signed offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey on a 5-year $87.5 million contract. And they also reeled in guard Ben Powers for $52 million on a four-year extension. Danger Russ even got some help in the receiving department, with the Broncos signing Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Chris Manhertz on a 2-year/$6 million deal.

Arizona Cardinals defensive end Zach Allen is coming in on a 3-year $45.7 million deal. Also, Wilson’s backup is arriving from Sin City. Former Las Vegas Raiders QB Jarrett Stidham will be on the bench wearing the orange crush on a two-year $10 million contract.

And that’s just day one for Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos.
